Loving on our mental health today
Mental health looks at how we think, feel and behave as it affects how we interact with others and ourselves in our daily lives, relationships and physical health. Being mentally well is the absence of an illness and sometimes for many of us that’s all we want, to be mentally well and that’s enough. But should we be on the borders of mental wellness? It’s so easy today with work, life, the news, bills and prices skyrocketing everywhere that we can be tipped into being “unwell”. It’s worth knowing what triggers you and what helps re-balance you or completely brings you over into the land of bliss.
During the pandemic, There was a big shift in people’s mental health and loneliness or lack of relational connections. We couldn’t go outside, we couldn’t be near each other, and we were afraid to even touch food in the supermarket- look how far we’ve come (hoping that you’re returning to a sense of normal)! Not being able to see or be in a room safely with friends and loved ones caused so many of us to experience being alone for extended periods. Oprah stayed indoors for over 300 days adjusting to self-isolation but typically many people can’t do that- as most of us currently don’t have $3.5 billion to our names!
There were months of gaining new skills: we heard of people being able to successfully braid their hair, cook new cuisines, start online businesses, leave their ex’s personal effects in the box to the left, and so much more! Many of these led to helping shift from the "stuckness", and we gave ourselves more love, grace and patience. We wanted to try things to help ourselves and stay connected to others.
Post pandemic, we happily ran outside and for some, we’ve gotten into a reverse of, how do we live again? Plus, is this the right way to do life? It’s refreshing to grab drinks with the girls, brunch with the gang and have family BBQs to build those connections but what about your personal connections. Are you masking again? We mean, covering up the stress, burnout, fatigue and jovially back to life expectancy. Have you forgotten about self-love and that mask? Now in this case, did you forget to make your DIY honey and oatmeal mask that you love, or the avocado and amla hair masque or the Korean magic sheet mask?
Everything takes time, don’t be so quick to run outside and forget what you built indoors to support the life changes. The pandemic was one global shift, don’t forget about your daily life changes that happen. Take stock of the season that you’re in, do you need to go back inside and recuperate with:
- writing in your journal
- prayer and self-discovery
- reading and lounging
- cooking a different cuisine by heart
- making lavender creams, sexy ylang ylang massage oils for intimate fun and eucalyptus candles like you’re the guru of bath and body works
